BC Parks and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

It was another inspiring and impactful year of shoreline cleanups in BC Parks.

As official Conservation Supporter for this initiative, BC Parks encourages individuals and community groups to take action and organize shoreline cleanups in parks and provides funding to help cover off cleanup expenses. In 2017, with the help of various individuals, community groups and BC Parks staff, 13 cleanup events were held in Provincial Parks across the province clearing approximately 30 kilometers of shoreline.

This national conservation initiative aims to inspire Canadians to keep all shorelines free of litter. In total, there were over 1,800 cleanups across the country engaging over 58,000 participants. Volunteers also picked up over 333,000 tiny pieces of plastic and foam – an absolutely astonishing effort!

Thanks for this important work. If it wasn’t already critical to our BC parks to have these shoreline cleanups, last night’s news was heart breaking. Right beside our beautiful Stanley Park in Coal Harbour, plastic particles pollute our water at very high levels. As Ocean Wise stated :

“Scientists with Ocean Wise gathered water samples outside Canada Place in Coal Harbour 10 days ago, and found1,258 particles of microplastics in one cubic metre of seawater. To put that in perspective, scientists collecting samples off the coast of Qatar last year found an average of 0.7 particles per cubic metre.”
