What is this consultation about?
In the summer of 2016, Premier Christy Clark tasked Parliamentary Secretary Linda Larson to work with the education sector, the public, community stakeholder groups, and the Minister of State for Rural Economic Development, Donna Barnett, to create a rural education strategy by the summer of 2017.
Online feedback was invited to provide a range of different perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing rural school districts and communities. Now, citizens can comment online on the Draft Discussion Paper, on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. The Paper will be available for comment until March 15, 2017 at 4pm.
The Parliamentary Secretary will also be hosting a series of regional open houses to discuss what she has heard online and through stakeholder submissions.
How can my contribution make a difference?
Feedback was invited online until January 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm. Based on the online discussion and stakeholder submissions received, a draft discussion paper has been posted for online comments. Comments are accepted via the online commenting tool until March 15, 2017 at 4pm.
The Parliamentary Secretary is hosting a series of regional open houses between January 26 and March 10, 2017 around British Columbia.
Once all feedback on the future direction for rural education has been reviewed, a final report will be released near the end of the 2016/2017 school year. The final report will include recommendations for the future, with a focus on the unique challenges facing rural school districts, recognizing the economic, social and cultural impact that schools have on small communities.
