Engagement Summary
The Ministry of Education and Child Care is creating an Indigenous-focused graduation requirement. This requirement is part of the Province’s commitment to truth, reconciliation and anti-racism. The new Indigenous education graduation requirement is proposed to take effect in the 2023/24 school year. There will be different options to meet this new requirement.

- Information for students, families and schools
Engagement Timeframe
March 7th to April 22nd, 2022
Input Received
- In total, 5,657 completed surveys were received during the engagement period
- R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. (Malatest) collected, analyzed, and summarized feedback
- 201 BC First Nations and 39 Métis Chartered Communities were invited to provide feedback through the public engagement website and directly to the Ministry
- Engagement materials and invitations to participate were shared with:
- B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres
- Indigenous Employees Network
- Native Education College (Vancouver)
- Virtual engagement sessions were conducted with teachers, students, parent advisory councils, school and district administrators and post-secondary institutions. Malatest reviewed the notes from all virtual engagement sessions and included a thematic analysis in their report
- In addition to the online engagement data and virtual engagement sessions, some organizations submitted written responses regarding the proposed policy; Malatest reviewed these 8 submissions and included a thematic analysis in their report

Feedback received through this engagement will inform final updates to the implementation plan for the new Indigenous-focused graduation requirement, which is expected to be announced in August 2022.
