Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 22, 2022 the B.C. government released an <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2023\/11\/CleanBC_MTE_v9.pdf\" title=\"\">Intentions Paper<\/a> proposing a new regulation to help tackle waste and pollution from single-use and plastic items. This was accompanied by a 10-week public engagement period to obtain feedback from Indigenous communities, local governments, the public, industry, and key partners. This feedback helped inform the development of the new Single-Use and Plastic Waste Prevention Regulation which will take effect on December 20, 2023. More information on the regulation can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/waste-management\/zero-waste\/plastics\">plastics webpage<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following single-use and plastic items are included in the new regulation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shopping bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disposable food service accessories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food service ware (polystyrene foam, PVC, PVDC, compostable plastics, and biodegradable plastics)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oxo-degradable plastics (plastics with additives designed to break down into microplastics)<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The engagement included two surveys, one for the general public and one for businesses. It also welcomed written submissions from Indigenous communities, local governments, industry, and non-governmental organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"results\">Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1,945 completed public surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>67 completed business surveys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>74 total written submissions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"nextsteps\">Next Steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Feedback received through this engagement was collected and summarized in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/121\/2023\/11\/Single-Use-and-Plastic-Waste-BC-WWHR.pdf\" title=\"\">What We Heard report<\/a>, which informed the drafting of the new Single-Use and Plastic Waste Prevention Regulation.
