Process
The Province is developing a waste prevention regulation under the Environmental Management Act. Feedback from this engagement will help create this regulation.
The proposed regulation will cover checkout bags, disposable foodservice accessories, problematic plastic foodservice packaging (polystyrene foam, PVC, and compostable plastics) and oxo-degradable plastics.
The Province is also proposing to continue to allow municipalities to create their own bylaws for single-use and plastic items (e.g., reusables for on-site dining).
The regulations won’t apply for single-use items that are necessary for medical or safety purposes. The Province continues to work with the health sector to identify opportunities to reduce waste and reliance on single-use plastic items, while maintaining strict hygiene and safety standards.
