{"id":2670,"date":"2014-03-11T09:22:38","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T17:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/watersustainabilityact\/?p=2670"},"modified":"2017-02-09T14:09:26","modified_gmt":"2017-02-09T22:09:26","slug":"blog-post-9-introducing-the-water-sustainability-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/watersustainabilityact\/2014\/03\/11\/blog-post-9-introducing-the-water-sustainability-act\/","title":{"rendered":"Blog Post #9 &#8211; Introducing the Water Sustainability Act"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, along with my colleague Minister Steve Thomson, I\u2019m pleased to announce the introduction of <a href=\"http:\/\/leg.bc.ca\/40th2nd\/1st_read\/gov18-1.htm\">Bill\u00a018<\/a> into the <a href=\"http:\/\/leg.bc.ca\/40th2nd\/1st_read\/index.htm\">B.C. Legislature for First Reading<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new <i>Water Sustainability Act<\/i> delivers on government\u2019s commitments to modernize BC\u2019s water laws, regulate groundwater use, and strengthen provincial water management in light of growing demands for water and a changing climate.\u00a0 Water is our most precious resource and this legislation will ensure that our supply of fresh, clean water is sustainable \u2013 to meet our needs today and for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>The WSA was prepared after extensive public engagement spanning four years. We met with British Columbians from across the province and received <a title=\"What we\u2019ve heard\" href=\"http:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/watersustainabilityact\/whatweheard\/\">thousands of comments, ideas and recommendations<\/a>. This input was considered in writing the Act and will continue to guide us as we develop supporting regulations and implement the legislation if passed.<\/p>\n<p>British Columbians also expressed strong sentiments about water pricing including many responses to this <a title=\"Blog Post # 2 \u2013 Pricing BC\u2019s Water\" href=\"http:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/watersustainabilityact\/2013\/10\/25\/pricing-bcs-water\/\">October 2013 blog post<\/a>.\u00a0 In my <a title=\"Blog Post #8 \u2013 Thank you for your feedback\" href=\"http:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/watersustainabilityact\/2013\/12\/10\/thank-you-for-the-feedback\/\">December blog post<\/a>, I indicated we would be engaging further on fees and rentals this year. Today kicks off that opportunity with the release of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2014\/03\/Pricing-B.C.s-Water.pdf\">Pricing B.C.&#8217;s Water<\/a>\u00a0that sets out a number of principles to help inform options for an improved pricing structure for B.C.\u2019s water<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Over the next four weeks (until April 8) we\u2019re looking for your comments on the principles we\u2019re proposing to use to help inform new water pricing options.
