In March 2021, the Province released a\u00a0<\/span>proposal to update and expand British Columbia\u2019s (B.C.) drought levels<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>. The proposal aims\u00a0to\u00a0more accurately describe\u00a0drought and\u00a0water scarcity conditions\u00a0in B.C., allow for improved protection of water resources and local aquatic ecology, and\u00a0make B.C. more consistent with\u00a0other jurisdictions across the continent. The comment period closed on March 31, 2021.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Province received 24 individual comments on the proposal\u00a0and heard\u00a0support from the\u00a0majority\u00a0of respondents\u00a0to expand the drought levels to a 6-level scale, align with the\u00a0<\/span>North American Drought Monitor<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0best practices, and conduct an operational trial period this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of the engagement, the proposal was\u00a0modified\u00a0to address concerns and the Drought Response Plan<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0updated\u00a0to reflect the revised proposal. A summary of feedback\u00a0received\u00a0and changes made is available in the\u00a0What We Heard and Outcomes<\/a> document. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Government is now implementing a province-wide operational trial of the proposed drought levels\u00a0during the spring and summer.\u00a0An evaluation of the trial will be conducted\u00a0at the end of this period to determine effectiveness. If the new levels are found beneficial, then they will\u00a0likely\u00a0become permanent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
