B.C. Wild Salmon Strategy

Engagement Summary

The Province of British Columbia developed a made-in-BC wild salmon strategy that will support restoring healthy and abundant wild salmon stocks in B.C. Read more about the framework for this process and strategy here. 

To begin developing the strategy, the Wild Salmon Advisory Council formulated an options paper on:

• Restoration and enhancement of wild salmon populations;
• Sustainable fisheries management and stewardship opportunities for communities; and
• New economic development opportunities to assist viable and sustainable community-based fisheries.

The public was able to participate by:

• Attending a community meeting led by the Wild Salmon Advisory Council
• Providing written input through an online feedback form

Input leads to action:

The Wild Salmon Advisory Council has provided their final report to government. Please read their recommendations for a Made-In-B.C. Wild Salmon Strategy. On July 5, 2019, twenty-three new projects funded under the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) were announced. This fund is a federal-provincial collaboration that aligns with key recommendations from the Wild Salmon Advisory Council’s report, which called on government to focus on near-term actions that could address the immediate needs of wild salmon and their habitats. Over the next five years, the BCSRIF will support protection and restoration activities for priority wild fish stocks, including salmon, as well as projects that will ensure the fish and seafood sector in BC is positioned for long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
