Fording River Operations Swift Project (EAO)
What was this engagement about?
Teck Coal Limited is proposing to extend its existing Fording River Operations, referred to as the Swift Project. The proposed Project would be located north of Elkford, within the East Kootenay region of southeastern B.C. If approved, the proposed Project would maintain the existing production capacity of the Fording River Operations and extend overall mine life by approximately 23 years.
As part of the environmental assessment process, Teck Coal Limited submitted an application for an environmental assessment certificate (Application) to the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO). The EAO invited comments on the Application to ensure that information and concerns regarding potential effects of the Project are identified and responded to during the Review Stage. These comments will be taken into consideration for the Ministers’ final decision about whether to issue a certificate.
Comments were accepted by online form, mail and fax from February 20 to April 6, 2015. The EAO will consider all comments related to the Application during this period. An electronic copy of the Application and information regarding the environmental assessment process are available online here. Additionally, the EAO invited the public to attend an information session in Elkford, BC, to learn about the Application and environmental assessment process.
