Kootenay West Mine Project (EAO)
What was this engagement about?
CertainTeed Gypsum Canada Inc. (Proponent) is proposing to develop Kootenay West Mine (proposed Project). The proposed Project is a gypsum mine to be located 12 kilometres northeast of the Village of Canal Flats. The proposed Project would mine the gypsum deposit at a rate of 400,000 tonnes/year and the expected lifespan of the mine is 38 years.
The proposed project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for a certificate by the Proponent, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements.
Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components, which the EAO has now received from the Proponent. Valued components provide the foundation of environmental assessments in British Columbia and many other jurisdictions. In British Columbia, valued components are defined as aspects of the natural and human environment that are considered to have scientific, ecological, economic, social, cultural, archaeological, historical or other importance. The valued components that are selected for a proposed project become the primary focus of its environmental assessment.
How can my contribution make a difference?
The EAO invited public comments on the Proponent’s draft Valued Components document for the Kootenay West Mine from October 27, 2014 to November 26, 2014. Comments were accepted online, by mail, fax or by attending an open house in Invermere or Canal Flats.
