Pacific Northern Gas Looping Project (EAO)
What was this engagement about?
Pacific Northern Gas, PNG, (Proponent) is proposing the Pacific Northern Gas Looping Project, an approximately 525 kilometre natural gas pipeline from Summit Lake to Kitimat. The proposed Project loops the Proponent’s existing natural gas pipeline and would serve new small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) export facilities at Kitimat, as well as the Proponent’s existing customers.
In addition to the pipeline, the proposed project also requires the upgrading of three existing PNG compressor stations, as well as the construction of one new compressor station. Ancillary facilities such as the upgrading of metering facilities and odorant injection facilities are also required at different points along the pipeline route.
The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application for a certificate, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve the Application Information Requirements.
The EAO held a 38-day public comment period from November 25, 2013 to January 2, 2014 on the proposed Pacific Northern Gas Looping Project draft Application Information Requirements (AIR) document.
How did my contribution make a difference?
The intention of seeking public comments was to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process.
Citizens were invited to comment online, by email, fax, mail or to attend an information session in Kitimat (Nov. 26), Telkwa (Nov. 27), Vanderhoof (Nov. 28), Terrace (Dec. 2), Smithers (Dec. 3), Burns Lake (Dec. 4) or Summit Lake (Dec. 5).
