Pacific Northwest LNG Project (EAO)
What was this engagement about?
Pacific NorthWest LNG (Proponent) is proposing to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility and marine terminal near Prince Rupert, within the District of Port Edward. The proposed Project would be located on Lelu Island and convert natural gas to LNG for export to Pacific Rim markets in Asia. The proponent has applied for a license to export up to 19.68 million tonnes of LNG per year for 25 years starting in 2019.
The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). The proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project.
The Proponent submitted its Application / Environmental Impact Statement (Application / EIS) which describes the project and the potential environmental, heritage, health, social, and economic effects of all phases of the project.
How can my contribution make a difference?
The EAO has held two 30-day public comment periods on the project. First, consultation from November 13 to December 13, 2013 on the proposed Pacific NorthWest LNG draft Application Information Requirements (AIR) document. Second, from April 2 to May 1, 2014 on the Application and EIS. In the last consultation phase, citizens were invited to comment online, by email, fax, mail or to attend an information sessions in Port Edward (April 7) and Prince Rupert (April 8).
