Sukunka Coal Mine Project (EAO)
What was this engagement about?
Glencore (Proponent) is proposing to develop and operate the Sukunka Coal Mine (proposed Project), a surface metallurgical coal mine, located approximately 55 kilometres south of Chetwynd and 40 kilometres west of Tumbler Ridge in northeast British Columbia. The proposed Project would produce 3 million tonnes per year of saleable coal for export to market.
The Proponent has submitted its application (Application) for an environmental assessment certificate which is required before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. Public comments were invited on this Application until October 8, 2015. The Application is available here.
In order to provide information to the public about the Application, and to receive comments from the public, Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) invited the public to attend an Open House in Chetwynd, B.C. on September 1, 2015.
All comments received by October 8, 2015 in relation to the proposed project will be considered.
How can my contribution make a difference?
The intention of seeking public comments was to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project were identified for consideration as part of the assessment process.
