Hənʎəmdᶻi Məkola / Yorke Island Conservancy Management Planning
What was this engagement about?
BC Parks is in the process for developing a management plan for Hənʎəmdᶻi Məkola/Yorke Island Conservancy.
Located on off the most westerly point of Hardwicke Island at the divide between Johnstone Strait and Sunderland Channel, this 39 hectare conservancy protects a significant historic site as Yorke Island has been designated and protected for its role in National defence prior to, and during World War II. During the Second World War, the island housed the principal gun emplacement guarding Johnstone Strait.
This conservancy was established pursuant to government’s land use decision for the Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan area. Hənʎəmdᶻi Məkola/Yorke Island Conservancy is in the asserted traditional territories of the K’ómoks, We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum and Xwemalhkwu First Nations.
How can my contribution make a difference?
At this stage in the management planning process citizens were provided the opportunity to provide background information and express how they would like the park to be managed. On September 13, 2014, BC Parks representatives were in Sayward, B.C. to provide information on the planning project and to get citizen input into the future management of the conservancy and the World War II structures located in the Conservancy. Opinions were also invited by online form, mail or email until October 31, 2014.
