McKenzie Interchange Project
Engagement Summary
The purpose of the engagement was to provide information about the McKenzie Interchange Project and allow an opportunity to provide input and share thoughts, at phases throughout the project.
The Province of B.C. and the Government of Canada are investing $85 million in the development and construction of the McKenzie Interchange Project, a new interchange on the Trans-Canada Highway at the Intersection with Admirals Road and McKenzie Avenue in Saanich. The intersection is the number one bottleneck on Vancouver Island. The project will help improve traffic flow in the Capital Regional District, while reducing collisions and improving pedestrian and cyclist safety.
Timeframe:
Fall 2015: November 17 – December 11, 2015
Spring 2016: February 24 – March 18, 2016 – an information session was held on May 18, 2016 at at the St. Joseph the Worker Parish Hall, 753 Burnside Rd. West, Victoria
Input Received:
Fall 2015
- 12,399 visits to the website
- 610 people attended a public open house on November 17, 2015
- 1,059 completed feedback forms were received (899 online and 160 in hardcopy)
- 139 submissions were received through email or phone
Spring 2016
- 1,559 visits to the website
- 353 people attended the public open house
- 373 completed feedback forms were received (288 online and 85 in hardcopy)
- 18 submissions were received through email or mail

Input leads to action:
- Based on technical analysis and feedback received to date from the public and stakeholders, the new McKenzie interchange will be built as a partial cloverleaf.
- Discussions continue with key stakeholders including local governments, community associations, First Nations and other groups.
- Detailed design will be completed including:
- Noise mitigation
- Environmental mitigation strategy; and
- Connections for cyclists and pedestrians
The project is on track for construction to begin late in 2016.
