Mile 28 Level Crossing
Engagement Summary
The public was invited to attend two drop-in information sessions about the Mile 28 Daumont Level Crossing project, located roughly 40kms east of Terrace. The first information session was on July 19, 2016 in Prince Rupert, and the second was on July 20, 2016 in Terrace.
The project will resolve the last level rail crossing on Highway 16 from Prince Rupert to the Alberta border. It includes the realignment of approximately two kilometres of the highway and replacement of the current level rail crossing with a bridge overpass. This will significantly improve highway efficiency and safety – for residents, tourists, and industrial traffic in the region. The project also includes adding wider shoulders to the road to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
The estimated $37 million project is being funded by the provincial and federal governments and will go to tender late fall 2016. The project will begin construction in spring 2017, and is expected to be completed in summer 2019.
On July 19 and 20, 2016 the Ministry hosted two public information sessions in Prince Rupert and Terrace respectively, which were attended by approximately 60 members of the communities total. The information sessions were an opportunity for interested stakeholders who use the corridor regularly to preview the project plans and provide comments. Attendees were encouraged to complete a comment form at both events.
Engagement Timeframe:
July 19 to September 20, 2016
Input Received:
- 60 members attended the public information sessions.
- 6 completed comment forms were received.
Input leads to action:
As a result of these open houses, the project team was able to connect with fishing and recreation guides who use the Andescite Creek boat launch regularly. We are now able to meet with these important stakeholders one on one to ensure their input is provided as the plan for temporary closures to the boat launch is prepared. The project team was also able to receive feedback on closures of Highway 16 for blasting activities, and will be including the feedback in the traffic management requirements when the project is tendered.
Further information on the project, including documents presented at the information sessions, has been made available on the project website.
