Engagement summary
The Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) is a 180 kilometre backcountry hiking experience from Sarah Point in Desolation Sound to Saltery Bay in Southwest British Columbia. The path weaves along the coast, passing through Tla’amin Nation Treaty Land, Malaspina Park, Inland Lake Park, and land managed by Recreation Sites and Trails BC (RST BC) and is Canada’s longest hut to hut hiking trail.
The SCT has been experiencing increasing visitor use, which has increased most dramatically in the past five years. RSTBC and BC Parks are embarking on a proactive approach to create a Visitor Use Management Strategy (VUMS) that sets desired conditions for the area and outlines both long and short term management decisions for recreation access and infrastructure that align with those conditions. The purpose of the project is to create a holistic Visitor Use Management Strategy that addresses the recreation pressures and increasing visitor attendance and associated challenges within the trail.
