Engagement Summary
The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) sought input from youth, young adults, Indigenous Peoples and partners, and community service partners about how improved supports and services for young people transitioning from government care will be provided, to ensure those supports reach all youth and young adults.
The feedback provided will help to develop plans for implementation, which focus on ensuring youth and young adults transitioning from government care have the wraparound supports and services they need to transition into adulthood and achieve their full potential.
Process
To hear the voices of Indigenous peoples on the proposed changes to Youth Transitions supports and services in B.C. and guided by the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, MCFD consulted with First Nations, along with Métis and urban Indigenous leadership organizations, through three distinctions-based Advisory Circles. Each Advisory Circle met three times for half-day sessions in May 2022.
The feedback heard has informed the implementation paper, which maps out the new Youth Transitions supports and services. The implementation paper includes key themes and guiding principles to consider.
The implementation paper was posted online for public feedback throughout Summer 2022. Responses from First Nations, along with Métis, Urban Indigenous leadership organizations, Indigenous peoples, youth and young adults, community partners, and the public will help guide planning for the new supports.
Please note that the potential legislative options that were shared for consideration are specific to replacing the Agreements with Young Adults program and supports for youth transitioning out of government care. They are unrelated to any other legislative proposals under development at MCFD.
Results
MCFD will use the feedback collected to inform the development of policy and legislation for the implementation of the new programs and services.
