Port Hardy Oceans Day

Jerry the Moose upstaged Raul the Killer whale but otherwise Port Hardy’s annual Oceans Day celebration at Rotary Park was devoted to all things aquatic. On Friday, June 7, BC Parks participated in this event hosted by the Port Hardy Chamber of Commerce. This celebration lasted the whole day with interactive and educational activities focussed on the ocean. Along with BC Parks, other participants at the event included: Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Living Oceans Society, Canadian Coast Guard, Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre, Port Hardy and District Chamber of Commerce and many others. The event opened with a traditional local First Nations welcome and schoolchildren were bused or walked to the event to get a close up look and in some cases hands-on education in marine wildlife, risks, and preservation. Approximately 400 children and adults from Northern Vancouver Island attend this fun event.
