Rebuilding the Berg Lake Trail – Phase one complete
Categories:
In 2021 the Berg Lake Trail experienced a significant flood event that was caused by a combination of unusual weather events – a heat dome, rapid meltwater, and excessive precipitation. Due to the substantial impacts, the trail has been closed for assessments, planning, and rebuilding.
The Berg Lake Trail rebuild has three main construction phases:
Phase 1) Trailhead to Kinney Lake Campground (opening June 27, 2023)
Phase 2) Kinney Lake to Whitehorn Campground (planned to open in 2024)
Phase 3) Whitehorn Campground to Berg Lake (planned to open in 2025)
Read below to learn about what work has been completed and what’s still to come:
Phase 1: Trailhead to Kinney Lake
In 2022, extensive work occurred on the first seven kilometres of trail, including:
- Replacing, fixing and moving several bridges;
- Adding new campsites, a new toilet and several new benches and picnic locations at Kinney lake Campground;
- Rebuilding the trail where eroding and slumping had occurred; and
- Upgrading and expanding the parking lot.
Phase 2: Kinney Lake to Whitehorn
- Installing two new bridges at the far end of Kinney Lake and over the Robson River in order to access Whitehorn Campground;
- Engineering moveable bridges to allow hikers to safely cross the Kinney Lake alluvial fans and the dynamic stream channels;
- Minor trail upgrades; and
- Completing a thorough review and assessment of re-route options to Whitehorn Campground.
Phase 3: Whitehorn to Berg Lake
In 2024, trail repairs will continue from Whitehorn Campground and Berg Lake. Some facilities and campsites at Marmot Campground may need to be relocated. The goal is to have this section of trail open in 2025.
Climate change is adding complexity
Climate change has brought with it many changes to parks and protected areas across the province, and the 2021 Berg Lake Trail flood was no exception. BC Parks is committed to re-establishing a world-renowned trail for future generations and part of this is ensuring we are rebuilding the trail with climate resiliency in mind. By working with scientists, hydrologists, engineers, and many partners we will continue to learn, reassess, and make changes as we navigate this complex and challenging project.
We thank you for your patience and look forward to welcoming you back to the first portion of the trail this summer, and to the entire Berg Lake Trail in 2025.
