Happy Birthday, Swan Lake Provincial Park!

BC Parks has a long and storied history: the first provincial park (Strathcona) was officially designated a park in 1911, and since then this number has grown to over 1,000 parks and protected areas.

As such, we happen to be big fans of birthday celebrations here at BC Parks. And, today we’re celebrating the 100th anniversary of Swan Lake Provincial Park.

About Swan Lake Provincial Park 

Swan Lake is a small provincial park located just southeast of Dawson Creek that sits on the border of Alberta. It holds the distinction of being B.C.’s third oldest park, after Strathcona and Mount Robson. While its size may pale in comparison to these monoliths of B.C.wilderness, it is no less picturesque or charming. Surrounded by trembling aspen, balsam poplar, white spruce, and willows – vegetation distinct to the Peace River area – visitors will find ample angling opportunities, wildlife viewing, and a grassy campground with facilities for kids, including baseball diamonds and a playground.

In the height of a Peace River summer (where temperatures can climb into mid-twenties Celsius), the lake offers prime opportunities for swimming or boating. And, for those on a Northern B.C. road trip, it offers an excellent place to cool off and rest before hitting the proverbial dusty trail.

In addition to its scenic setting, Swan Lake is an important cultural site. The park was once a First Nations settlement for those who travelled extensively throughout the region; artifacts, bones, and other items that affirm First Nations oral histories of the area have been unearthed and carefully recovered.
