Engagement summary
The Bulkley-Morice (BuMo) Forest Landscape Plan (FLP) is one of five new provincial projects shaping a new framework for sustainable forest management in British Columbia. This project seeks to address the challenges of climate change and the cumulative impacts of natural and human disturbance on the land by developing direction to manage ecosystem health and resiliency, while reflecting local and community values. The plan will contain objectives for the shared values that First Nations and public derive from the Bulkley and Morice Timber Supply Areas.
This project covers approximately 2.2m hectares and includes the communities of Smithers, Telkwa, Witset, Fort Babine, Houston, Granisle, and Topley.
First Nations are co-developing the plan as part of the commitment to true, lasting reconciliation, co-operation, and partnership based on recognition and respect for the rights and title of all First Nations. To advance reconciliation and meet British Columbia’s obligations under the Declaration Act, we will work in full partnership with the First Nations in co-management of the BuMo FLP project.
Scope of the project:
- Develop a forest landscape plan
- Complete a collaborative timber supply review process for the Bulkley and Morice Timber Supply Areas
- Provide landscape level direction and guidance for the Skeena-Stikine and Nadina Districts that align with other initiatives
- Complete a monitoring and investment plan
- Incorporate parts of the old growth strategic review
- Provide recommendations to amend legislation if required

How your contribution makes a difference
The Bulkley-Morice Forest Landscape Planning Project is in Phase 2 of the 5-phase process for developing a Forest Landscape Plan (FLP). This phase focuses on “values identification and assessment” for FLP. This involves learning the values local communities place on forest ecosystems to inform future forest management approaches.
