Engagement Summary
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (Declaration Act) requires the government to develop an action plan that will meet the objectives of the UN Declaration. This action plan must include consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples in B.C.
The four main goals to achieve the objectives of the UN Declaration are:
- Self-determination and self-government, including Indigenous institutions, laws, governing and political bodies, economic and social structures
- Owning, using, and developing lands and resources within First Nations’ territories
- Living without interference, oppression, or other inequities
- Maintaining Indigenous cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, languages

Ministries will work in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples to deliver their specific actions.
Annual reports on the progress of the action plan will be posted annually on June 30. Check out the Past Annual Reports
Results
The Declaration Act Action Plan was released March 30, 2022.
Over the two phases of the engagement, the province:
- Hosted meetings with representatives from over 150 First Nations and Indigenous organizations
- Received over 100 written submissions
- Received feedback from rights and title holders
- Saw direct participation from involved government agencies
