Engagement summary
Mt Seymour Resorts is located 40 minutes from downtown Vancouver in Mount Seymour Provincial Park, in the North Shore mountains. The area is in the ancestral territory of the xʷməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), səl̓ ílwətaɬ (Tsleil‑Waututh), and Stó:lō Nations.
Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. is updating its Ski Resort Development Plan (SRDP). The SRDP is a long-term plan about the vision and concepts for changes to the resort over the next 60 years. Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. has developed a proposed SRDP document including maps which are available on the Mt Seymour Resorts’ website.
Plan proposals
Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd.’s vision is to be “Metro Vancouver’s starting gate to mountain recreation”, creating memorable experiences in a mountain environment for people of all skills and abilities. The resort wants to offer more activities year-round while staying true to its stated commitments to the local community and the environment.
The phased development proposed in the SRDP (‘the plan’) includes expansion of the Controlled Recreation Area (the land in Mount Seymour Park the resort can use) to add about 100 hectares of new terrain at higher elevation to make the resort more resilient to climate change. In winter, the plan proposes expanding from 41 to 90 ski trails and increasing the number of lifts from 4 to 14. The plan also proposes snow making for more reliable snow conditions, especially at low elevations. In summer, the plan proposes new activities, including a Learn to Ride mountain bike area, accessible hiking trails, a skywalk bridge, and family adventure activities.
The plan also proposes new on-mountain lodges and warming huts, yurts and cabins for overnight stays, and expanding restaurants, retail, ski school, and rental space in the base area. If all proposed developments are built, the resort’s capacity would be 5,950 visitors during the busiest times, compared to just over 2,600 today.
To help visitors get to the resort and park, the plan proposes 40% more parking area and better organized parking, reservations, increased shuttles, more bus parking, and a gondola with a base at the foot of the mountain.
BC Parks involvement
Mount Seymour Provincial Park is close to nearby communities in Metro Vancouver and offers many outdoor activities outside the resort in summer and winter. The park was established in 1936 with the support of local recreation groups.
The Province began operating a ski area in the 1950s. In 1984, Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. purchased ownership of all facilities and equipment and entered a 50-year renewable park use permit for the long-term operation and development of the ski area.
Mount Seymour Provincial Park is also managed for protection of ecosystems, and the park is home to old growth and second growth forest, subalpine lakes and meadows, and habitats for wildlife and species at risk.
BC Parks will review and make a decision regarding approval of the final plan (SRDP). This review will consider whether the proposed SRDP will:
- Improve recreation in the park
- Help keep the resort running over the long term
- Fit with the park’s management goals
- Reduce or limit negative impacts
- Consider feedback from the public, interest holders, and First Nations
If approval is granted, each project in a finalized SRDP will still go through planning and review, including environmental impact assessment and First Nations consultation. Only then will BC Parks decide if projects proceed.
After the survey period ends, BC Parks will prepare a Public Engagement Summary Report. In addition to this survey hosted by the Province, Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. is leading other public engagement activities. Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. will also produce a summary of the results of their own engagement activities. Both reports will be made publicly available.
Mt Seymour Resorts’ plan (SRDP) is still a draft. Mt Seymour Resorts’ would like to create a future vision that meets the needs and is supported by the people who visit the park and resort. Mt Seymour Resorts will review the results of the survey and their own engagement activities to inform the final plan it submits to BC Parks for a decision. These changes to the plan will be described in a ‘What We Did’ Report that will be publicly shared by Mt Seymour Resorts.
How your contribution makes a difference
Your feedback will be reviewed by BC Parks and considered as part of its assessment of the proposed plan. BC Parks’ role is to protect representative and special natural places and support responsible recreation. Your feedback helps us decide whether the plan fits these goals or needs changes before further assessment and approval. The results of this survey will also be considered by Mt Seymour Resorts Ltd. in updating their proposed plan before further assessment and final review by BC Parks.
