What is this consultation about?
This consultation is about collaborating with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit on a health information management policy framework for a proposed new B.C. law. This consultation explores how a new health information management framework could:
- Empower First Nations, Métis, and Inuit through greater access to their own personal health information to self-determine their own health & wellness journey
- Ensure health centre staff in First Nation communities as well as urban Indigenous clinics have timely access to the information needed to provide health care to their clients
- Enhance trust in how personal health information is managed across the B.C. health sector through clear accountabilities and robust safeguards for privacy and security
- Enhance the flow of information across the B.C. health sector with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit governing and non-governing health entities to support Indigenous-led health research, policy, program development and service delivery
This consultation aims to explore these topics and their alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and is part of a process to consult Indigenous Peoples under Section 3 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).
Feedback you provide will inform the development of policies for a Cabinet decision to proceed with drafting a new health information management law.
