What was this consultation about?
The Ministry of Health (the Ministry) is obligated under section 3 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (Declaration Act) to consult with Indigenous Peoples to ensure any new proposed laws are consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This website provides information on consultations with Indigenous Peoples, including policy proposals for a new health information management framework.
Consultations have explored how a new health information management framework could:
- Empower First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals through greater access to their personal health information to self-determine their health and wellness journey
- Ensure health centre staff in First Nations communities as well as urban Indigenous clinics have timely access to the information needed to provide health care to their clients
- Enhance trust in how personal health information is managed across the B.C. health sector through clear accountabilities and robust safeguards for privacy and security
- Enhance the flow of information from the B.C. health sector to First Nations governing bodies and Métis and Inuit representative organizations to enable the development of health programs, services and research that are driven by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit
Consultations have informed the development of proposed policy solutions that could inform the drafting of new legislation for health information management.
