Engagement summary
The Province is collecting feedback on a proposal to create a new Special Forest Management Area (SFMA), which is a designation available in the Great Bear Rainforest (GBR) to restrict commercial forestry. The area would be 7,866 hectares currently authorized for commercial forestry under Tree Farm License (TFL) 45. Through amendment to the Great Bear Rainforest (Special Management Area) Regulation, these hectares would be protected from commercial forestry harvesting, and the allowable annual cut (AAC) for TFL 45 would be reduced.
The Province is working collaboratively with Kwiakah First Nation on this to increase conservation within the area and would like to understand how this change may impact existing uses of the lands. The area is currently part of TFL 45. Interfor, license holder for TFL 45 and Kwiakah First Nation have been working together on a purchase agreement for the harvesting rights associated with this area.
We are excited to build a future…
Message from the Kwiakah First Nation
Where nən (grizzly bears) and their cubs roam through mossy, misty forests, not searching long to find a bounty of berries, roots, and fish to eat
Where, 50 years from now, young adults and children won’t know what badly managed forests look like
Where all of us live in harmony with each other, our forests, and our oceans, leaving them healthier than we found them
Where our people have the means to reclaim our land, our culture, our spirit
Results
On May 24, 2024, the Special Forest Management Area was established. The M̓ac̓inuxʷ Special Forest Management Area covers 7,865 hectares of forested land within the Great Bear Rainforest. The creation of the management area followed an engagement period earlier this year that allowed the Province and Kwiakah First Nation to consider comments from the public.
